A tale of 3 Twitter accounts

I have an opinion about the election, but that isn't the point.

Months ago, anticipating the way social media might work, I set up additional Twitter/X accounts to see if I could get them to go different directions with things I liked, who I followed, how I commented, etc.

In my main account, I leaned hard into the conservative side.  In the additional accounts, I worked the spectrum and covered the middle of the road all the way to progressive.

At some point, two of the accounts just went away/were suspended with no access for some reason that was never explained.  Could be user error or some policy I am not aware of.

The results were what I expected - the harder you lean into a direction with social media, the more it feeds you what you're leaning into.  It doesn't take long to be completely inside an echo chamber.

Looking at friends/social media connections of people across different platforms, I've noticed the same thing.  Whatever they seem to like or dabble in, they get more of it.

A few times, I attempted to re-steer things back from one extreme to another - and that's likely when a couple of the accounts went away - and had limited success.  Something gets baked in at some point.
Maybe you have to go longer with the steering and be more patient.  Not sure.

It's a sobering reminder of how we get and process information and how we establish preferences for kinds of information.

Some leaned much stronger into feelings, "rights", and personality.  Others leaned into "facts", history, and personality.  Some preferred kittens, funny stuff, and fight videos.

Either way, we tend to get to places and times in which we pre-filter or pre-judge anything and everything and have the anonymity of the internet in which to feel emboldened and safe to go a little further, state things a little stronger, etc.

One interesting thing I noticed was the conservative side seemed consistent through the weekdays and the more progressive side seemed way more present in the Friday and Saturday windows.  Could totally be the accounts I had and that there is nothing more to that - just an interesting effect.

Going to attempt to start another round again after the election and see if anything develops over the next six months.

Peace and goodwill.
